Modernization of the SPRINGER dry lumber sorting line control system with 12 sloping pockets with electric drives at the Luzales site (Kydzyavidz, Priluzsky District, the Komi Republic) was conducted. The construction of the line feed conveyor with butt and top stops and trimmer allows the company to get boards from 2 to 6 meters in length with a gradation of 10 centimeters. The order of a grade and board trimming are carried out manually by the operators using joysticks. Board length is measured by the line of photosensors. The thickness and width are detected by the VECTOR LMS scanner produced by AVTOMATIKA-VEKTOR. In the course of modernization the old relay control system was replaced by the Simatic S7-300 controller. Reconstruction of cabinets and line control panels were performed. For visualization, configuration and lumber accounting the line was equipped with a personal computer with the «Boards Sorting» software.
The next step of sawmill reconstruction became the modernization of the Rettenmeier Gaildorf-Unterrot green sorting control system with 24 pockets with a movable bottom controlled by the hydraulic cylinders. Our company replaced the obsolete Siemens Simatic S5-115 controller, production of spare parts for which is terminated in 2014, with the modern Simatic S7-300. New PC and controller software was developed and implemented. The VECTOR LMS scanner for lumber sorting by thickness (previously there was no such function) was installed. As a result equipment downtime was reduced while the reliability and flexibility of the sorting lines increased.

To increase the speed and volume of lumber supplied to the sawing line, a new feeding line has been built on the basis of the NICHOLSON A5 debarker. The efficiency of the old feeding line with the Cambio Kockums 7145CA debarker remained unchanged. Operating mode of the lines is alternate. Also modernization included the LINCK VPS22 milling and profiling machine, which helped to reduce the number of boards entering the EWD FR9 trimming line. At the output of the multiple saw, only an edged board is obtained, which immediately enters the green sorting.
Also, the following works were completed:
at the entrance to the sawmill shop instead of the old JÖRG ELEKTRONIK JORO-Sonar scanner, the VECTOR-2010E log scanner was installed with the function of sawlog accounting and diameters control, followed by the cull of logs which are out of sawing patterns;
the Moeller ZB4-901-SF2 second row machine master controller and the Moeller PS306 circular saw master controller were replaced by ET200M decentralized I/O devices and connected to the Profibus network of the Siemens Simatic S7-300 main controller;
automation cabinets from re-assembled and installed equipment were connected to the existing line automation system;
software for main line controller Siemens Simatic S7-300 was developed;
PC software has been developed, it has the functions of visualizing the saw tool positioning, equipment setting up, warning and emergency messages displaying.
